Form does not precede the act of painting. It gathers across the surface.
For Pauline Rintsch and Kim Stolz, form emerges through the shifting relation between paint and its material support. Stolz builds layered geometric structures without sketches or outlines. Repeated strokes gather into angular forms, while subtle changes in color and density turn rhythm into depth. The weave of jute, folds in prepared linen, and absorbency of raw canvas catch light, redirect the brush, and enter the composition. Each painting is titled for the time of its completion: the moment when movement, material, and light find balance.
Rintsch’s figures arrive less steadily. Across linen and wood, translucent layers of oil produce flesh that appears luminous, weathered, or damp. Ears and eyes detach from familiar anatomies, while pinching gestures hold tenderness and pain in the same touch. Fruit, frogs, and other objects drift through as though animated by the strange logic of the bodies around them. Figure and ground slip into one another, suspended between appearance and dissolution.
Across abstraction and figuration, both artists build a language of painting from the surface outward. Stolz’s structures cohere through movement and repetition; Rintsch’s bodies and objects remain unsettled in form and relation. Their paintings remain permeable to what lies beneath, each taking form through, rather than upon, its support.
